Our Attorneys are Your Advocates

Firm founder Anthony R. Mignanelli successfully litigated the landmark special needs planning case of Chenot v. Bordeleau. In that case, the Rhode Island Supreme Court decided that the benefits held for mentally disabled individuals from discretionary trusts could not be counted as part of their resources in determining eligibility for government benefits. This case had a profound impact on special needs planning as it established legal principles that were reflected in amendments to Social Security laws in 1992 and 1993.

Attorney Mignanelli has also prevailed in a number of other precedent-setting cases involving novel and unresolved areas of estate planning law, including spousal life estates and defective charitable remainder trusts.

Associate attorney J. Katherine Scott is a member of the Rhode Island Estate Planning Council and is a frequent lecturer on various estate planning and estate settlement topics.
